Two Wheatland Center School eighth grade students have received awards and recognition in the Southeast Wisconsin Scholastic Writing Region of the Scholastic Writing Awards, in partnership with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. Elaina Hetland earned a Gold Key in Novel Writing for “You I”. Mackenzie Idell earned a Gold Key in Novel Writing for “Remember”. Both novels have been recognized at the highest regional level by a panel of creative professionals and have advanced to national judging in New York City. Elaina Hetland also earned a Silver Key in Poetry and two additional Honorable Mentions in Novel Writing. 

These students will be honored during a regional ceremony in early summer for outstanding merit in originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal voice and vision in their writing. There are three levels of recognition in the regional awards: the Gold Key, which is the highest award, followed by Silver Key and Honorable Mention awards. Entries receiving Gold Keys advance to New York for national judging by professional writers, editors, publishers, and educators.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have recognized some of America's most celebrated artists and writers while they were teenagers, including Stephen King, Amanda Gorman, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol. For additional information, please see artandwriting.org

Several 5th grade Wheatland Students earned recognition for their essays in the Americanism Essay Contest. Each year the American Legion asks students to write a prescribed essay conforming to contest rules. For 5th graders it must be between 250-300 words. Students are awarded points for theme development, clarity of Ideas, and knowledge or understanding of the question. They have a chance to win a monetary prize if they place in the local contest and 1st place winners are forwarded to the national contest. If students are forwarded to the national competition, they can win $50 and have $50 donated on their behalf to the Children of Warriors National President’s Scholarship Fund. Winners would also be posted on the www.ALAforVeterans.org website. The following Wheatland students were recognized for their Americanism essays.
