Before the 2016-17 school year started the Wheatland teachers wanted students to know they were ready to have them back at school. After a day of in-service, the 5 bus routes took a practice run with teachers aboard. Teachers got off the bus in Wheatland neighborhoods, knocked on doors, and brought an open house reminder. The teachers felt if was a great way to let the students know they cared about them and were anticipating their return. A teacher to be name later even put on part of the Willie the Warhawk costume in 85 degree heat and typical Wisconsin humidity. This effort did not go unnoticed as a parent in New Munster was overheard saying, "I thought I saw a chicken get off that bus."
